With its lush visual style and a narrative that features both mythological and ecological underpinnings, the influence of Miyazaki on co-directors Xuan Liang and Chun Zhang can be felt in practically every frame. While the end result may not quite reach the heights that Miyazaki has regularly hit during his amazing career, it is nevertheless a worthy effort, filled with visuals that frequently dazzle the eye even if the story is more likely to inspiring the scratching of heads instead. The film is set in the realm of The Others, a sort of parallel dimension that controls the seasons and tides on Earth and is where the souls of humans go after they passthe good ones to be reborn as whales and the damned as the rats that scurry about in the underground. Travel between the two worlds can be accomplished via portals that appear under certain circumstances. When young people of The Others come of age, they utilize the passages to enter our world in the form of red dolphins to observe the laws of nature first-hand without making any contact with humans before returning back home seven days later.

In a world unseen but linked to our own, magical beings control time and tide. To fulfill her rite of passage, year-old Chun visits the human world in dolphin form, where her life is saved by a young man who drowns in the process. Wracked with guilt, Chun accepts a deal to resurrect him as a fish, whose life and death is now entwined with her own. Nor, presumably, is such resemblance entirely coincidental. This is where the stunning animation really takes flight. Magical maelstroms that bring the two worlds together, effectively turning the sea upside down, are rendered with an elemental force.

Studios acquired the North American distribution rights, with a wide release on 6 April in co-distribution with Funimation Films. In a mystical realm that exists beneath the human world, populated by magical-powered beings, a girl named Chun participates in a coming-of-age ritual where she is transported through a portal of water to experience the human world in the form of a red dolphin. There, she encounters a human boy who lives by the sea and reveres aquatic creatures. During a storm, Chun is tangled in a fishing net near the boy's house, and the boy drowns while freeing her from the net. Chun returns to her world, taking the boy's ocarina with her. Chun bargains with the soul keeper, a resident of her world who collects virtuous departed souls from the human world, to return the boy to life.
