My daughter has short white socks to wear to school in the summer term and I always call them Bobby Socks. I also grew up in that era. The girls I knew who wore their socks folded down to the tops of their white buck saddle shoes. I think the black and white saddles were from a later time I noticed them being very popular in the mid-to-late sixties and into the early eighties. When I was in school, the "only" colors for saddles were blue and white and all-white. Maybe the blue was to match their rolled-up blue jeans?
No lampshades worn on the head required. Decide whether a poodle skirt or the bad-girl look is the one you want, then build your outfit from there. Super short bangs and short hair curled to perfection were mainstays of the times. The look was achieved by using pin curls and rollers. Natural waves were considered unruly and wild. Pin curls are easy enough if you have plenty of bobby pins on hand.
Dancing in a poodle skirt but that is not a poodle. A s sock hop is probably the most common event theme of the fifties decade. Visions of teenage girls twirling in felt poodle skirt costumes , white lace socks, and saddle shoes make me want to jump in and dance with them. While the poodle skirt look has been shown in nearly every 50s movie, in every sock hop scene, for the last 60 years it was not the only thing young women wore to a sock hop, nor was it the most popular. Let me show you how to dress for a s sock hop as authentically as possible with a poodle skirt or not! Shop poodle skirts here. They could wear dresses too but the 50s were the era of mixing and matching separates.
Capri pants get most of the attention, but it was the cigarette pants that were worn more often. Cigarette pants had high waists, side or back zippers, flat fronts, wide waistbands 3 inches , no belt loops, and full hips and were slim fitting through the legs. They ended at just above the anklebone. Wide leg s pants were still worn into the early 50s as well with a more tailored fit, higher crotch and flat front no pleats. Good wool or cotton s pants were always lined. Having baggy knees was taboo, so lining helped keep the leg straight and wrinkle free.
Hi allI have an invitation to go to a cookout that is supposed to be the 50's theme. Anyone have ideas as to what I could wear, besides a poodle skirt??? It will be outside and probably hot, so no sweaters, either. I'm stumped!!!! Roll up some men's jeans to capri length.
