Great Russian banya! Homey, traditional, charming, authentic. Would prefer to go nude with my boyfriend on mixed gender days like they do in Europe however. This is as authentic as it gets. This traditional winter pastime is so ingrained into the Russian culture that we start feeling un-well without it. I've been coming here since the place opened. When only members of the same sex are present it is customary to enter the sauna in the nude.
South-Western Bathhouse, for sheer sensory overload, may well be the cultural food experience to rule them all. There are something in the order of , Russians living in the GTA, and they have quietly set about catering to their own needs by establishing banyas. They range from grubby and utilitarian to sleek and well appointed. They are almost universally patronized by the Russian community, men in particular, who go to immerse themselves in stifling steam heat, drink a little beer, do deals, get information, play chess. The first time I noticed one was from the bus heading to or from York University, in January of , on a soul-crushingly ugly stretch of Finch. Fast forward to the current dismal winter of our discontent.
The saunas are great, and loved the food and drink in the restaurant. Will definitely visit again! We've been to all banyas in GTA and this one is by far the best. From actual banya to quality of service and food. We go every week and cant ever have enough.

This copy is for your personal non-commercial use only. Behind a nondescript suburban strip mall, hides a full-fledged Russian-style banya or sauna called The South-Western Bathhouse. That is exactly how owners Victor and Valentina Tourianski want you to feel when they invite you into their second home to experience the reinvigorating properties of an old-fashioned Russian steam bath followed by hearty, made-from-scratch dishes from their motherland. Leave it to a New Yorker to discover a gem literally minutes from my home. While Oseland sets up his shots in front of the only natural light in the place the steamed, glass front door , I ask the Tourianskis about the finer points of Russian banya culture, including the post-steam repast.

I haven't been to a banya before, but I really like this place. The location is easily accessible. It is so nicely decorated inside. The couple renovated the interior themselves can they've put a lot of care and attention to detail into it. Its beautiful.
In Russia, banyas — or saunas as they're known here — are for health and socializing. The 2,sq. Clients choose their style of heat and then plunge into a tub of room-temperature water. We use ours at home every weekend and nobody in the house has gotten sick since we started. With the large Russian and Eastern European population in Mississauga and Etobicoke, building a public bathhouse seemed a great business idea. Victor, who has worked in construction, built the bathhouse and tea room. The saunas are made of cedar while the rest of the high-ceiling structure is done in what he calls European style — lots of stone, tile, wood and plaster.
