Remember the story about three people, all blindfolded and describing parts of an animal they were all holding? One noted a wide and floppy part another a narrow flexible part with hair at the end and yet another a large, round, and tall column-like part. All were describing parts of an elephant and the story is about how various people can experience the same phenomenon an elephant in very different, yet accurate, ways. Board members described what they believed the VMCCA is or should be and they provided very different descriptions. None of the descriptions fit together to accurately describe the new school that actually opened for students just two months ago. Board members asked about whether the school is an early college or a career and technical school, and recommended that the school pay more attention to attracting first generation college students. Another board member asked about whether or not the school graduated students with associate degrees.

The building was formerly a Coca-Cola bottling plant before being renovated to its current configuration. Vernon Malone College and Career Academy is named after former educator, politician, and school administrator, Vernon Malone. The inaugural principal when the school opened in , was Dr. Ashlie Thompson. The school is just south of highway I and the Raleigh Beltline. Vernon Malone College and Career Academy operates on a modified-traditional calendar.

An empty building, formerly a Coca-Cola bottling plant, languished in a South Raleigh neighborhood. The neighborhood bore the burden of this lost building, occupying valuable land on a downtown corridor but devoid of activity. Stagnation benefits no one, and so the Dream Team hatched a plan. Aimed at closing achievement gaps and encouraging career development for students seeking to develop their skills outside of a traditional high school setting, this new program will open doors to advanced education and opportunities with marketable career prospects. The old bottling plant provided the ideal canvas to help set that plan in motion. Once a center for production, this underutilized space has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility for career and technology programs.

  2. I didn't know what to expect my first day of school. I remember feeling how warm it was, I felt so much support here, it didn't feel like school. The teachers.
