Hey Diddle Diddle

This collection of beloved standards from traditional American fiddling literature will introduce young players to an aspect of string playing that is motivational, fun, and pedagogically appropriate. Singing the tune first provides a framework for the instrumental instruction.

"Hey, diddle, diddle,"

It has a Roud Folk Song Index number of Hey Diddle Diddle, The cat and the fiddle, The cow jumped over the moon. The little dog laughed, To see such sport, And the dish ran away with the spoon. The rhyme is the source of the English expression " over the moon ", meaning "delighted, thrilled, extremely happy". The melody commonly associated with the rhyme was first recorded by the composer and nursery rhyme collector James William Elliott in his National Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Songs The rhyme may date back to at least the sixteenth century. Some references suggest it dates back in some form a thousand or more years: in early medieval illuminated manuscripts a cat playing a fiddle was a popular image.
