This page explains how to work out the shapes of molecules and ions containing only single bonds. The examples on this page are all simple in the sense that they only contain two sorts of atoms joined by single bonds - for example, ammonia only contains a nitrogen atom joined to three hydrogen atoms by single bonds. If you are given a more complicated example, look carefully at the arrangement of the atoms before you start to make sure that there are only single bonds present. For example, if you had a molecule such as COCl 2 , you would need to work out its structure, based on the fact that you know that carbon forms 4 covalent bonds, oxygen 2, and chlorine normally 1. If you did that, you would find that the carbon is joined to the oxygen by a double bond, and to the two chlorines by single bonds.

The Lewis electron-pair approach described in Chapter 8 "Ionic versus Covalent Bonding" can be used to predict the number and types of bonds between the atoms in a substance, and it indicates which atoms have lone pairs of electrons. - The higher the allergen-sIgE level of an individual, the higher the number of epitope residues that are found in the allergen.
Shapes of Molecules and Ions
Methane CH4 , ammonia NH3 , and water H2O all have octets around the central atom, yet they have different shapes and bond angles. What are the shapes and bond angles of each of these molecules? Predict the bond angle in each case. Explainwhy the XeF2 molecule is linear and How to identify which compound undergoes which hybridisation? How to remember the shapes and bond angles for a particular hybridisation?
