This reality tv show came to mind first and foremost because of Black women that are central to the drama that ensues, and the kinds of representations of Black women that makes the show popular among its audience. Let me give you a brief overview of this show that has caught the eye of teens, some year olds, thirty-some year olds…basically viewers from 18 to 49 year olds as stated in cable ratings. What made Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta such an immense hit show was the drama that these people went through. Physical altercations such as weave snatching, cursing, and infidelity, were the reason for why viewers immediately fell in love with the show. Specifically, the love triangle between the cast members Stevie J, a Grammy-award winning music producer, his former-stripper-turned-girlfriend Joseline Hernandez, and his baby mother Mimi Faust became the all-time favorite for the audience. Hooks criticizes the white gaze, but I wonder what responsibility does Mona Scott Young, a Black woman and executive producer, has in reproducing the same thing that hooks warns Black women spectators to be critical of?
