The culture of Kerala has developed over the past millenia, influences from other parts of India and abroad. Kerala traces its non-prehistoric cultural genesis to its membership around the AD 3rd century in a vaguely defined historical region known as Thamizhagom — a land defined by a common Tamil culture and encompassing the Chera, Chola, and Pandya kingdoms. At that time, the music, dance, language first Dravida Bhasha — "Dravidian language" — then Tamil , and Sangam a vast corpus of Tamil literature composed between 1,—2, years ago found in Kerala were all similar to that found in the rest of Thamizhagom today's Tamil Nadu. The culture of Kerala evolved through the Sanskritization of Dravidian ethos, revivalism of religious movements and reform movements against caste discrimination. Kathakali from katerumbu "story" and kali "performance" is a year-old form of dance - drama that interprets ancient epics; a popularized offshoot of kathakali is Kerala natanam developed in the 20th century by dancer Guru Gopinath. Meanwhile, koothu is a more light-hearted performance mode, akin to modern stand-up comedy ; an ancient art originally confined to temple sanctuaries, it was later popularized by Mani Madhava Chakyar.

Classical dances are based fully or partly on the principles and techniques embodied in the ancient Hindu scriptures and technical texts on dance and allied arts. The earliest of these known scripts is Bharatha's Natya Shasatra believed to have been written around the second century B. Most of the prevailing systems of classical dancing governed by elaborate techniques with a high degree of refinement have had their origin in the dances of the common people.

She is also a writer and editor. With all that, and with the constraint of having grown up outside Kerala, it is indeed a very kind gesture on her part to agree to write on similar songs from Hindi and Malayalam movies. With such generous people I am confident we should be able to cover all the major languages in India in which such cross fertilisation with Hindi movies and songs have taken place. Thank you , Anu, for your excellent article. I do not presume to have the knowledge of music that any of these gentlemen have; this post came about as a result of my telling AK that Hindi film tunes crossed boundaries into my home state of Kerala as well, and asking if listing them in the comments would be an issue. In return, he promptly asked me to develop that into a post. So, with trepidation, here I am, writing a guest post for the first time.

However, Kathakali differs in that it also incorporates movements from ancient Indian martial arts and athletic traditions of South India. The dance symbolises the eternal fight between good and evil . The most studied version of the Natya Shastra text consists of about verses structured into 36 chapters. Jones and Ryan state it is more than years old. According to Farley Richmond and other scholars, Kathakali shares many elements such as costumes with ancient Indian performance arts such as Kutiyattam classical Sanskrit drama and medieval era Krishnanattam , even though a detailed examination shows differences. So Kottarakkara Thampuran created another art form based on Krishnanattam , called it Ramanattam because the early plays were based on the Hindu epic Ramayana , which over time diversified beyond Ramayana and became popular as 'Kathakali'.
