Gather the bones and lay them in the sun in patterns that capture the eye No one could know, display for everyone the holes in our souls we despise Timber and stone, monumental, remnants frozen in time Carried alone the burden, knowing it was all we could do to survive Only embers remain Refusing to fade There's still light to find our way Only embers remain Black turning to gray There's still light to find our way Only embers remain Scatter the dust, what we once held in hand seems was never at all Gone in a gust, not ours to understand, ah agony perpetual Holding my breath and close my eyes, for a second I can see you again Motionless, like that day we lost who we both should have been Only embers remain Refusing to fade There's still light to find our way Only embers remain Black turning to gray There's still light to find our way Only embers

Lamb of God is a band that requires no introduction; if you've never heard of them, we'd like to direct you to a little thing called "the internet," and also "metal" and also "music. The record was obviously written while the band was under a lot of emotional stress, and Blythe has been open about his struggles during that time, but as we discovered, he wasn't the only band member who was battling demons. During our initial talks about premiering the video for "Embers," band's publicist made a vague comment about the story behind the video being very personal for guitarist Mark Morton, but declined to go into detail—so we called up Morton himself to talk about it. During the writing process for VII: Sturm und Drang , he was recovering from an incredibly intense time in his and his family's lives—the period of grief and healing that consumed them after they tragically lost their firstborn child, Madalyn Grace Morton. It had a massive impact on Morton's life, including as you'll see his creative work. We had a nice, emotional conversation, but given how sensitive the subject still is for him, he decided that he'd rather put the experience into his own words. Morton penned an essay about the experience to share instead, which we've got posted below in full.

VII: Sturm und Drang is the first album after lead vocalist Randy Blythe's manslaughter case and a brief hiatus after finishing the Resolution touring cycle. Randy Blythe stated that people shouldn't expect a prison record and that instead, he would "write about things that affect me very deeply", such as going to prison in a foreign country and being charged with manslaughter, as stated by Blythe. The album's subtitle, literally translated as " Storm and Stress " , indirectly refers to Blythe's experience. Blythe says he and Mark Morton were talking about how the record's theme relates to the psychology of humans reacting under extreme conditions, and they wanted a word that reflected such situations. Morton, whose mother is German, came across the term while researching German vocabulary.
