You'd think he'd have figured it out by now, but for the life of him Marcus Mumford still couldn't tell you where the songs come from or how you nudge the process along. Never mind the fact this minister's son has been the genial frontman of Mumford and Sons for more than a decade now, a songwriter among three others who still considers that part of the gig very much a caper. An unsolved mystery that has helped the band top charts, headline festivals and sell boatloads of records - but a mystery all the same. This is all really just another way of saying when you've functioned as a creative unit for as long as Mumford and Sons, bringing new music into the world is the product of an incomprehensible brew of talent and good fortune. And as Marcus' musician friend Noel Gallagher reminded him before the band actually started work on Delta in earnest, it's also about just doing the job, dammit, whether you feel like it or not. Radio has always blended great music with big personalities. - But whatever they do, it seems this folk-rock four-piece will forever be a lightning rod for critical vitriol. That they are inauthentic was the original source of irritation when these public schoolboys from London emerged almost a decade ago, all tweed waistcoats, neckerchiefs and hoedowns.

The band recorded over 25 songs with Epworth and were insistent on a collaborative process, much like their live shows and their EP Johannesburg. Around people would get involved in these sessions, with some being featured on the record, including American singer-songwriters Maggie Rogers with whom the band is touring and Gill Landry. Except this time, Epworth has put them through various production effects, rendering the instruments almost unrecognizable. The band has avoided discussing specifics publicly, but in recent years, Ted Dwane underwent brain surgery, Marshall got married and Mumford became a father.
The band recorded more than 25 songs with Paul Epworth at The Church Studios , and were intent on keeping the "collaborative spirit" of their live shows and EP Johannesburg. Delta has been called an album that "draw[s] on the shared experience of being on and off" tour, and distinct from the band's "anthemic" previous album, 's Wilder Mind , in that it is more "tender", "introspective and reflective". Delta received mixed reviews from music critics. At Metacritic , which assigns a normalised rating out of to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 59, based on 18 reviews. Delta debuted at number one on the US Billboard with , album-equivalent units , including , pure album sales.
