Firstly, it must be understood by the reader that this article was first published in , well before active speakers were even known to the majority of the public. At the time, only a very few active speakers existed, and they were predominantly reserved for the most esoteric of applications. There were virtually none available from any established manufacturer, and the very thought of having power amps co-located with speakers often within the same enclosure was not considered. I built my first active speaker system a PA for use with a band in around , and at the time it was quite possibly the first such system ever sold. Active speakers are still uncommon, with the vast majority of hi-fi systems still using separate amplifiers and passive crossover networks. These have been the mainstay of home hi-fi for so long that active systems are often viewed with suspicion - some owners like to think that they can change power amps to 'change' the sound.

Bi-wiring is a way of connecting your speakers to your amp using two pairs of connecting wires rather than one. Some speakers come with two pairs of binding posts; one pair for the high frequencies and the other pair for the low frequencies. In a usual set up, one pair of wires carries the full range musical signal from the amplifier to each of the loudspeakers as shown in the below diagram. However with bi-wiring you will be running two sets of loudspeaker cables from your amplifier to each of your speakers. One pair which carries the high frequencies tweeters and the other will carry low frequencies woofer from the amp. By having this set up, you are forcing the tweeter currents and the woofer currents to run in separate cables. At Cambridge Audio all of our modern speakers do not have the capacity to be bi-wired.

Bi-amping and tri-amping is the practice of using two or three audio amplifiers to amplify different audio frequency ranges, with the amplified signals being routed to different speaker drivers, such as woofers, subwoofers and tweeters. Biamping can be done with a single power amplifier if the device has more than one amplifier, as the case with a stereo power amp. Triamping cannot be done with a stereo power amp; a mono power amp would need to be added or a home theatre receiver often 5 or more amplifiers could be used. With bi-amping and tri-amping, an audio crossover is used to divide a sound signal into different frequency ranges, each of which is then separately amplified and routed to separate loudspeaker drivers. In some bass amplifiers using bi-amping, the woofer and horn-loaded tweeter are in the same speaker enclosure. In some bi-amp set-ups, the drivers are in separate speaker enclosures, such as with home stereos that contain two speakers and a separate subwoofer. The terms derive from the prefix bi- meaning 'two', tri- meaning 'three', and amp the abbreviation for "amplifier".

Those who are serious about audio tend to consider all the possible ways to adjust speakers in order to achieve that perfect sound. Small increments can surely add up, often transforming a great system into an excellent one. There are some potential benefits to bi-wiring, although it's not guaranteed due to the subjectivity of sound. However, before you start, you'll have to make sure the option even exists. These models feature two pairs of binding posts on the back of each. Bi-wiring a speaker can be a relatively inexpensive way to improve overall sound quality. Ideally, one would run two identical lengths and type and gauge of two-conductor wire to each speaker.
