Since they first crossed paths in on the leafy Nashville campus of Belmont University, Judah Akers, Brian Macdonald and Nate Zuercher have made a habit of blurring sonic demarcations, their alt-Americana mishmash a custom hybrid of bluegrass, hip-hop, folk and rock. We love surprising people and doing things that are a little out of the box from what someone may expect. When we started out, Brian and I were pretty new to our bluegrass instruments, banjo and mandolin, and felt like we had to sound a particular way, and do everything in a particular vein, and wear Americana clothing and sort of look the part for what was popular at the time. Hopefully, that connects with people more than being inside of a box. The show goes on. I guess some of the nerves have died down a little bit and turned into excitement and exhilaration with all of it. NZ: For sure.
