Linda Ronstadt has covered a wide spectrum of music over the course of her long career, but she looks back with a special fondness on two albums she made with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris. Speaking to Matt Wardlaw from Ultimate Classic Rock , Ronstadt says it was obvious that the three singers had a special vocal blend from the first time they sang together one day at Harris' house. It surprised all three of us. We immediately said, 'Well, we have to record. Though all of the singers were stars in their own right, Ronstadt says a collaboration between them was anything but an easy sell. Nobody else thought it was a good idea except for us.
Talking about the first time she harmonized with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt in , Dolly Parton said, "We all got to singin' and it was absolutely incredible. It gives me chills, even now. Parton , Harris , and Ronstadt were all splendid vocalists on their own, but they'd also shown a talent for collaborating with others throughout their careers. And when the like-minded women decided to make an album together, they created something rare, a collaboration between three major stars that never smacks of ego. Parton , Harris , and Ronstadt brought out the best in one another on their brilliant album, Trio , with the group harmonies sounding even more glorious than their lead vocals. Trio also found Parton and Ronstadt working with better and more flattering material than they'd had on their solo albums in quite a while.
It was released on March 2, , by Warner Bros. Longtime friends and admirers of one another, Parton, Harris and Ronstadt first attempted to record an album together in the mids, but scheduling conflicts and other difficulties including the fact that the three women all recorded for different record labels prevented its release. Finally a collaboration effort came to fruition, being produced by George Massenburg. Billboard published a review in the issue dated March 14, , which said, "If the "new traditionalists" in country music still have a body of work to draw from, it's largely because these three celestial songbirds kept it alive and vibrant throughout the adulterated '70s. But the members of the trio are not resting on their reputations here; their album is stunningly beautiful on every cut. Crossover is certain and will most likely be instantaneous, fueled by Ronstadt's current ride atop the Hot —in a duet with James Ingram—with "Somewhere Out There".
Thirty-two years ago today March 2, was a great day for fans of strong female voices in country music. The three longtime friends had tried on several other occasions over the years to record a project together but were logistically prohibited by their own recording contracts and busy schedules. Several of the songs from these earlier sessions made it onto other discs from the women, including "Mister Sandman" on Harris' Evangeline album and "I Never Will Marry," a duet between Parton and Ronstadt that appeared on Ronstadt's Simple Dreams record, among others. The project was produced by George Massenburg; it became a No. Twelve years later, in , the threesome released their second album, Trio II , which had actually been recorded in The record failed to produce any hit singles. In , they released The Complete Trio Collection , featuring remastered songs and rare and unreleased material.

32 Years Ago: Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris Release ‘Trio’
A release date has officially been announced for a long-rumored collection that closes the book on one of the most successful collaborative music projects of the last half of the 20th century. The Complete Trio Collection will consist of newly remastered versions of the original albums, which sold five million copies and earned three Grammys when they were initially released. Although each of them had enormous success as solo artists, when Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris first sang together in the Seventies they captured a blended sound that was nothing short of otherworldly. While they fully intended to translate their musical chemistry to record, with three divergent careers not to mention recording for three separate record labels , sessions were executed and aborted until they finally got underway in earnest early in When Trio was released, it topped the country album chart for five weeks and was a Top Ten entry on the Billboard Trio II will also be released on vinyl for the first time.
