It was the band's first commercially successful album, and is considered to be where the band first consolidated its aggressive hard-rocking sound. The album's best-known track, " I'm Eighteen ", was released as a single to test the band's commercial viability before the album was recorded. Formed in the mids, the band took the name Alice Cooper in and became known for its outrageous theatrical live shows. The loose, psychedelic freak rock of the first two albums failed to find an audience. The band moved to Detroit in and was influenced by the aggressive hard rock scene there. A young Bob Ezrin was enlisted as producer, and he encouraged the band to tighten its songwriting over two months of rehearsing ten to twelve hours a day.

Alice Cooper - Love It To Death album review

I know bands were often contractually obligated to produce two LPs per annum back then, and that may or may not have had something to do with the limited number of fabulous tracks on both LPs. Bob Ezrin was a rock producer who specialized in making records about people who crack up. His most famous collaboration in this arena was Pink Floyd's The Wall, which was about a cloistered rock star who had a busted childhood and went through many stages of crazy, including desecrating a hotel room and chasing a groupie around a perilously situated deli cart. Ezrin's most depressing record was Lou Reed's Berlin , which is just too painfully specific to listen to repeatedly. It's what they call a bummer. Ezrin's style is built on space and melodrama.

Pretties for You and Easy Action -- released in and , respectively -- were sludgy, messy and mired in period psychedelia. Love It to Death sounded little like the Alice Cooper heard on the two earlier albums, and the LP transformed them into one of Detroit's premier bands. In almost no time, they went from mostly obscure Los Angeles via Phoenix rockers with an occasional headline-grabbing stage show to one of the architects of Detroit's hard-rock renaissance spearheaded by radical groups like the MC5 and the Stooges. Along with some assistance from Guess Who producer Jack Richardson, he helped shape the sound of the record, working closely with the band as they sharpened their songwriting and locked into a proto-metal groove. In December , Ezrin took Alice Cooper into a Chicago recording studio and helped change their, and his, future. Listen to Alice Cooper's 'I'm Eighteen'.

Alice Cooper 's third album, Love It to Death , can be pinpointed as the release when everything began to come together for the band. The main reason for the quintet's change was that the eventually legendary producer Bob Ezrin was on board for the first time and helped the Coopers focus their songwriting and sound, while they also perfected their trashy, violent, and theatrical stage show and image. One of the band's most instantly identifiable anthems, "I'm Eighteen," was what made the album a hit, as well as another classic, "Is It My Body. Love It to Death was the first of a string of classic releases from the original Alice Cooper group. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript.
