Ohio Special Election Results: 12th Congressional District

Troy Balderson has been declared the winner of Ohio's 12th congressional district special election. Balderson's victory means the GOP will maintain control of a district that's been solidly Republican for almost 40 years. The two-term state senator was backed by both Gov. John Kasich and President Trump, who stumped for Balderson on the campaign trail and tweeted often on his behalf. Friday was the deadline for five counties — Franklin, Licking, Marion, Morrow and Richland — to certify their election results.

Balderson arrested that surge just enough in the reliably Republican outer suburbs and exurbs of Delaware County to emerge with a 1, vote advantage. On balance, these sharpening divisions leave Democrats in a strong, but not guaranteed, position to win back the House by maximizing their gains in well-educated suburbs and picking off even a few Republicans outside of the major metropolitan areas. What does that tell you about our midterms? But Democrats will be operating with very little margin for error if they must win back the House almost solely by capturing white-collar suburban seats. It was a measure of the difficult environment confronting Republicans that Democrats effectively competed for this district at all. Since the seat was reconfigured in to make it more safely Republican, former Representative Pat Tiberi never carried less than 64 percent of the vote. Trump carried the district by 11 percentage points four years after Mitt Romney won it by

Polls in the months leading up to the election indicated a strong lead for Balderson, a current state senator. But more recent ones indicate a dramatically slimming margin for the year-old Republican. Tiberi retired to take an executive position at a business group in Ohio, but it is not totally clear what motivated him to seek employment elsewhere. Some reports suggest Tiberi could have been growing frustrated with continued gridlock in Congress, despite Republicans controlling the Senate, House and White House after President Donald Trump took office. Throughout the campaign trail, polls indicated a strong lead for Balderson in the district that encompasses both suburbs and agricultural land. In June, a Monmouth University poll showed Balderson ahead by 10 points.

Voters in Ohio’s 12th District chose Troy Balderson, a Republican endorsed by President Trump, to replace Representative Pat Tiberi, a Republican who resigned to work for a business group. The race was too close to call for nearly three weeks.

The two get to do it all over again in November when they run against each other again for a full two-year term. He grew up in Sidney and graduated from Wright State University. He later graduated from law school at Syracuse. Trump, meanwhile, has already claimed credit for the W in a tweet. Kyle Kondik of the University of Virginia Center for Politics said the district should have been an easier win for Balderson. The district, he said, "contains some of the most bedrock Republican turf in the state and this basically could have went either way. Pat Tiberi, a Republican from suburban Columbus, retired.
