Season three finds Juliana Crain grappling with her destiny after seeking safety in the Neutral Zone. Realizing that their fates are intertwined, she works with Trade Minister Tagomi to interpret the mystery of the last remaining films. Meanwhile, as tensions between the Reich and the Empire continue to rise, Joe Blake returns from Berlin and is sent on a diplomatic mission to San Francisco , where he and Juliana reunite and come to a turning point in their relationship. Edgar Hoover plot against him. The third season renewal of High Castle was announced on January 3 rd , Well over a year had passed since since the second season's airing, with little to no solid news regarding the new season.

After a slightly hyperactive, way-too-long season premiere, The Man in the High Castle settles in a bit in episode two, but to what end? Is anyone else already a little bored? Most of all, the writers need to break John Smith out of his grief about his son now that dominated a lot of last season and has somewhat sidelined the best actor on the show through 20 percent of this one already. It sounds silly, but something big needs to happen, as this year is too focused on the end of the last one. She had to go.

The title of episode 2 of The Man in the High Castle season 3, Imagine Manchuria, refers to a line Kido says to his would-be new assistant. If Nakamura thinks San Francisco weather is unpleasant in the winter it tends toward cool and frequently rainy , imagine what it will be like when Kido turns on him and has him sent to Manchuria, which can be as cold as the Arctic in winter. In other words, things can always get worse. This is the theme of the episode, as the solution to one problem inevitably causes a bigger problem down the line. Kido arrests Juliana, but also catches Trudy, who he executed in the opening scenes of season 1. The triumph of catching a Resistance operative is overshadowed by the mental discord of seeing a woman he knows to be dead, now inexplicably returned to life. And of being put in conflict with Tagomi once again.

The Man in the High Castle Season 3 Episode 2 Review: Imagine Manchuria

This review contains spoilers for The Man in the High Castle. With conspiracies and political intrigue sprouting and beginning to blossom promisingly, the pacing of the story feels very comfortable but strong, especially since the show takes time to broaden the scope of its parallel worlds idea that has been in the background for so long. On the one hand, it was refreshing to see how quickly Juliana grasps the concept of her multiple selves this early in the season.

Imagine Manchuria

Juliana, we are told, is the key to everything. If she can harness this ability, perhaps she can spot a pathway that led one of these realities out of the predicament currently ensnaring her own. Dick by now. This series was never interested in being an exercise in mind-fuckery like Legion or Maniac , to name two recent shows that draw more from Dick than High Castle has since its earliest days. When Juliana and Trudy are rounded up by the Kempetai and imprisoned by Kido who is more than a little surprised to find that a woman he knows he killed is somehow still alive , I expected their time in lock-up to drag on for several episodes. That might well have been the case under the previous production regimes.
