Parts of the Eye. Here I will briefly describe various parts of the eye:. The sclera is the white of the eye. The Cornea. The cornea is the clear bulging surface in front of the eye. It is the main refractive surface of the eye.
To understand the diseases and conditions that can affect the eye, it helps to understand basic eye anatomy. Here is a tour of the eye starting from the outside, going in through the front and working to the back. The eye sits in a protective bony socket called the orbit. These muscles move the eye up and down and side to side, and rotate the eye. The extraocular muscles are attached to the white part of the eye called the sclera. This is a strong layer of tissue that covers nearly the entire surface of the eyeball. These three layers together are called the tear film.
The sclera , [help 1] also known as the white of the eye , is the opaque, fibrous, protective, outer layer of the human eye containing mainly collagen and some elastic fiber. In the development of the embryo , the sclera is derived from the neural crest. In the elderly, fatty deposits on the sclera can make it appear slightly yellow. Many people with dark skin have naturally darkened sclerae, the result of melanin pigmentation. The human eye is relatively rare for having an iris that is small enough for its position to be plainly visible against the sclera. This makes it easier for one individual to infer where another individual is looking, and the cooperative eye hypothesis suggests this has evolved as a method of nonverbal communication.
